I got invited to a party by a co-worker/friend. She is married with a husband and small child. She isn't a wild and crazy person, kind of conservative/socially correct. I am nervous about it. I haven't been to a party in over a decade. The parties I went to were frat parties--no socializing, just getting high/shitfaced drunk and trying to find somebody to take home. What happens at adult parties? How are you expected to act? I totally suck at socializing in a group setting.

if they serve alcohol, drink in moderation (one or two drinks). compliment the hostess on the food or decorations or whatever. chat with everyone a little. it would be a nightmare for me. i do much better when there is a structured activity like scrabble or monopoly or outburst. unfortunately, most parties don't include this.

As I was born in southern California and live among both anecdotal crowds, I can tell you all you really have to do is explain interesting stuff you've been up to and eat appetizers. Personally, I've been to parties which included everything we're discussing, save for social conservatism. Everyone I know is wild by comparison to this scenario, so I'm sitting at home pondering profitable things I should code so I can afford somewhere to host more relaxed get-togethers.

What's really key to me is taking my hospitality along wherever I go; it's easier to get along with everyone at a party if you decide in advance to help out the hosts.

Just go an yap away with people.
Don't get sh*tfaced with coworkers cuz ya might say/do something stupid, which will get around.
Don't expect to find a date there either, that could get weird before it got good.
Keep an eye out to meet/talk other people from your work that you usually don't have much interaction with.
Ask them what they do and how they like it.

Do NOT say anything negative about work even in agreement with someone else. Sympathize and say That must be hard. Find a different convo soon.

You'll be fine.
You may even discover some friendly people there.

Thanks for the responses. I didn't go to the party this time. An emergency came up, but I know it will be in the situation again.
