Personally I don't put a lot of stock in funerals. If he has a commitment to a charitable event, he should fulfill it. Although attending would be great publicity for him.

Get over it, Lazar. No one is obligated to attend a funeral, not even best friends.

I agree with the OP. A close friend's funeral obviously trumps a charity gig. It's a no-brainer.
But then, I never thought much of Shatner anyway.

Considering both men are Jewish, I am more surprised that Nimoy's executor chose to bury him today instead of Friday afternoon or last night.

I totally disagree. If he has signed a contract to host a charity event, it would be wrong to cancel at the last minute unless the deceased was immediate family. It would be a huge burden for the organizers to get a new host. Unless he can't speak because he is overcome with emotion, he should fulfil his obligation to the charity. It's a no-brainer.

Not to mention that, if Shatner knew or believed he couldn't attend emotionally and chose, instead, to visit Nimoy's grave at a later time with his family and friends, that would be understandable. Celebrities really, really despise living out their private lives with the ubiquitous paparazzi around. So, instead of a lasting memory of his friend's funeral, he sees his red-eyed self plastered on every tabloid cover worldwide. If that is true in his case, I support it.

Celebrities cancel appearances all the time, for much less reason.

Indeed, which suggests maybe that Shatner doesn't want to distract from the funeral. In fact, I suspect most of Nimoy's celebrity friends "miss" attending.

I think Mr. Nimoy would be pleased that his friend chose to fulfill his obligation to a worthy cause. At least I assume it's a worthy cause, and not an event to raise money for down-and-out celebrities so they can afford more Botox treatments -- or something like that.

Shatner said in a post on Twitter that he was in Florida, having previously agreed to appear at a Red Cross ball.

So I guess he's just making an appearance at the Red Cross Ball. And presumably donating his time then.

I still don't even get why this is a story though. But, then again, I barely attended my father's funeral. I find them to be insipid.

Glad I don't have to make that call.

I know Shatner gets a lot of heat for being a douche bag, but I believe him when he says he's broken up about Nimoy's death, and about having to miss saying goodbye.

(Saw an episode of "Man From UNCLE" with both of them in it. Wonder if thats where Roddenberry found them?)

Jewish funerals are supposed to be as soon as possible, but never on the Sabbath.

Shatner's daughters attended the funeral, and he managed to get a flight which arrived in LA just after the ceremony. I haven't liked everything Shatner has said and done over the years, but I have no reason to question the sincerity of his statements re Nimoy.
