As the title suggests I am genuinely confused when I go to gig and I see people seemingly enjoying the music when it's

a - deafeningly loud
b - you can either only hear bass or beats so the song is unrecognisable

I guess the sound quality in the "alternative" venues my friends go to are terrible. but really, all i have is ear ache at the end and I can't talk to anyone cos I can't hear anything and it seems like a waste of time.

trying to be sociable. not going v well :(

It depends on the band , some bands suck live but others add a different dimension to their music. My ears usually ring for days afterwards

I saw T Rex play live in 1972. The band were terrible, the screaming and yelling from the audience was deafening, but at least the ticket only cost 75 pence.

it really does depend on what you're listening to. ambient style music works well but rock-like stuff is better with headphones.

this band's sound was all over the place. they are all good performers but clearly don't think as sound engineers when it comes to live shows. i wanted to rip my ears van gogh style. my friends seemed to be into it tho lol

I enjoy live music more in open stage or if it's ambient / electronica and the musicians are more in tune (pun intended) with adapting their sound to a live setting.

True, and that was a 50% price hike on their 1971 tours, when the admission price was 50p.

Unfortunately you get a duff gig sometimes , everybody can have an off night.

I like gigs, but I always get really antsy when it's a gig that I'm not playing =/ I get all pumped up and ready to jump on stage...but I don't think they would appreciate that.

As for the volume, local gigs don't usually bother me that much, but actual arena shows are way too loud for me. When I saw Sabbath, I was having some real issues with Machine Head's volume, but I made it through okay.

Well, that's the job of the...sound engineer ;) Some guys are pretty good at it, some guys are only doing it because nobody else will. I've seen some guys who do such a crap job, I am always super tempted to sneak over to the board after the guy walks away for a beer...

I think it depends on the band, though. If it's a punk show, I kind of like having muffled vocals, I don't know why. Probably because most of the lyrics don't really matter anyway =)

Unfortunately, when it's my band playing, I just have to hope for the best...unless I want to get a wireless guitar system so I can walk into the audience to see how everything sounds =|

I have also learned, if the sound guy asks me if I need a mic, I should always say yes, and make sure I'm loud enough in the monitors.
