This is a free-to-play Half-Life 2 mod that is downloadable on Steam. Basically, they took Half-Life 2 and gave it better visual effects. I have to admit the original game has aged and the mod's new visuals look fantastic.

The lighting has been improved. In the original, you could go to an area with no light source and it would be well lit. In the new version, such areas are now pitch black.

There's new mist and fog effects. It's noticeable when you reach the bridge in Highway 17. Even the toxic waste river in Water Hazard has nice smoke effects.

My favorites are how you can see light rays through windows, bugs flying around dead bodies, and of course a more colored night sky over Ravenholm to make it feel more haunted.

There were also some bugs in the old version that were patched up, new achievements were also added, and I'm looking forward to see what else the mod has improved over the original.

I highly recommend this mod. Half-Life 2 is among my top number list of best games I've ever played that I can't put in any particular order.

I know there's also the cinematic mod, but let's be honest. The visuals are overdone and I'm not a fan of the character design changes (I haven't even gotten over what happened to Crash and Spyro). I also read that they replaced the Kelly Bailey composed soundtrack with that of the Dark Knight trilogy, which sounds kind of cool but still ridiculous.

Is this an official mod from Valve? Or just a 3rd party update? In any case can you tell me the name so I can download it and not get the wrong thing? Also have they updated episode 1 and 2 as well, or just the core game?

It's a fan made mod that enhances the lighting and graphical effects. It was done by one guy. It was so well done that Valve gave their permission to put it on Steam. Here are some videos. As for Episodes 1 and 2, I've never played those so I don't know.

The best part is Half-Life 2: Update is free.

There's also commentary by famous let's players and Freeman's Mind creator Ross Scott.

A number of posters in the comments section of these Youtube videos feel that many of the 'improvements' are actually detrimental. In the case of the misting effects, I agree with them. What is the point of obscuring impressively detailed graphics?

I think HL2 looks fine the way it is. The screenshots at the mod's page didn't really look like anything special.

I could've sworn HL2 originally had "light rays through the windows", I remember seeing it in that hallway where the guard makes you pick up the pop can and throw it away (or maybe it was just near that hallway), but I was replaying it after they updated the game with achievements and everything, and the effect wasn't there anymore.

Hmmm, I dowloaded it and made it as far as part way through the hovercraft sequence and so far doesn't really look any different to me - maybe one place where light rays coming through a window looked a little better, and maybe the combine force fields that prevent you from entering certain rooms might be slightly different, but other than that, no difference at all so far.

I just read that the success of Half-Life 2: Update Mod just earned the creator of the mod a job interview with Gearbox Software. I really hope they hire him.
