Final evaluations: IQ & Childhood Autism Rating Scale re
I saw my shrink for the final time today. She gave me the results of my WAIS IQ test, and she also administered the Childhood Autism Rating Scale to me (though I'm 29, apparently this is still used as a diagnostic tool for adults, asking them what things were like when they were children as well).
The WAIS went as follows (including IQ subscores):
Verbal Comprehension: 134
Perceptual Reasoning: 98
Working Memory: 105
Processing Speed: 114
Total IQ: 115
The CARS:
33 (high end of moderate autism, bordering on severe, which begins at 34)
She believes that, despite my autistic "quirks," I can function well enough without the need of therapy or voc rehab. She will type up a report in a couple of weeks that I can give to any future employers should a need arise, and then I'm done.
I'm currently a substitute teacher.
I am of the opinion that one should't disclose one's autism unless it would be useful to one's self.
Employers tend to take a dim view of people who seek accommodations because of autism (at least in the US). They become concerned that their autism might affect the quality of their work. Ingrained prejudices often take over as well.
I could understand how one feels one should be honest, and should explain one's self. I wish this was a culture where this could be done.
Good points. I do have mixed feelings. As a sub, I don't need to disclose since I don't interact much with other employees daily, and I deal with multiple districts. In other jobs, my autism sometimes has been a hindrance. I could wait to disclose until later in such an instance, or try to find other jobs where autism won't interfere much. This is something I'll have to consider a lot come summer, for substitute teaching only pays for as long as the school year goes.
