...what do you REALLY think?

Personally, I'm underwhelmed. I really, really, really hope it gets better because I am a huge bat-fan. But, right now, it just seems to be really hit and miss.

IGN gave the last episode 7.6/10 and summed it up with:

Quote:
Gotham still has hurdles to overcome, but "Selina Kyle" felt more like the show was trying to do its own thing, and spin its own stories, than the premiere. Still, the cops are almost too corrupt and the bad guys made some weird, bonehead moves that brought the episode to a halt a few times.

But Jada Pinkett Smith and Robin Lord Taylor are still doing great work as Fish Mooney and Cobblepot. And right now I like the crime lord power struggle more than the "cops and robbers" stuff. Though the Dollmaker looming in the shadows was a nice touch and Gordon and Bullock's rapport has improved.

I pretty much agree with this.

What do you guys think?

Yeah. I have to agree with you. I was underwhelmed. I think that's because I was expecting to see more heroism and less detective/police work. I do like that they have the beginning of Oswald Cobblepot. That was a nice touch.

I'm also quite surprised and happy to see that the rising new villain is the Penguin. Usually, he's dismissed as a rather ineffectual villain, but they've reinvigorated the character. Hopefully the Penguin will have life breathed back into his character in DC comics because of this series.

Yeah, I actually like the show's treatment of Penguin and the Riddler.

Also, I think Rocksteady did a good job making Penguin a menacing, truly evil villain in Arkham City.

I think this is what Gotham's Penguin will grow up to be... (without the accent)

Pretty cool - -but why does the Penguin speak in in Aussie accent?

^^^ It's supposed to be a Cockney accent. According to his backstory in Arkham City:

Quote:
Regardless, the unhealthy fixation to outdo the Wayne family and their business cost many of the Cobblepots their health and their business empires, including Oswald's father, Stanley Cobblepot, who began to neglect his son as a result and sent him overseas to England to spend his educational years. While overseas however, Cobblepot was often bullied for his small stature and spent many days outside of school and on the violent streets instead, associating with the various criminals and thugs.

I've only seen one episode of Gotham and IMO, it's not that bad of a show but I do agree that it needs to get better.

A few thoughts since today is Gotham day...

It looks like the question of who killed the Waynes is going to loom large in the show. As an old-school fan this bugs me a bit. I really like the idea that the Waynes were killed (and Batman created) during a random act of violence by some two-bit punk.

However, if they are going after some kind of conspiracy, some grand design, I think it should be the Court of Owls who killed the Waynes...

From what Falcone said, it wasn't the mob. So, let it be the CoO.

Also, another interesting idea...

Falcone thinks he runs Gotham, but fans know that the Court of Owls has been in charge since the beginning. I'd like to see this notion played up in a subtle way--hinting that somebody, unseen, is manipulating Falcone and maybe throwing in a bit of Owl symbolism for good measure.

I'm just glad I was raised in the 1960's on a diet of TV shows such as Twilight Zone, Wild Wild West, Man From Uncle, Mission Impossible, Prisoner, I Dream Of Genie and Get Smart. These days it just rehash after rehash after rehash. Where are the writers today? The TV series of Batman in the 60's with Adam West was OK. The first Batman movie directed by Tim Burton was excellent, but after that it was all downhill. The Christropher Nolan Batman trilogy was a train wreck. Now we have a new Batman TV series. What's the point. How many times do we have to watch Batman when he was a child, witnessing his parent' murders?

As many times as DC can milk it. But in all seriousness I'm sick of Batman theres way too much of him and Gotham but people keep buying into it so it'll never end.

I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything.... I'm mainly just curious, but do you only know Batman from TV/movies?

The reason I'm asking is because Burton's movie was very stylish but not very true to the character at all from a comics point of view.

Nolan's films were much truer to the character and referenced some of the best Batman stories from the comics--Year One, Dark Knight Returns, No Man's Land, The Long Halloween, etc.

I guess I'm just wondering how you arrived at your conclusions.

...

A bit more on topic, I thought last night's episode was fairly bland again, but it was nice to see Penguin back in town.

I think that it is alright. I could totally just watch the story of Penguin climbing the crime ladder.

Absolutely! Penguin's by far the most interesting character on the show. I do recall in the first episode where Fish has a comic on stage for an audition in the background, while criminality ensues. That immediately brought to mind how the Joker in The Killing Joke - prior to being traumatically driven insane - had been a down-on-his-luck comic. I gotta wonder if that comic is going to resurface. :chin:

Have to admit I haven't read the Frank Miller comic of The Dark Knight, which Christroper Nolan has based his film trilogy on. My main criticism of Christroper Nolen is his flashy camera techniques and borrowed plot devices to sell his movies.

I've never watched it but I have noticed that in general IMDB gives much higher ratings for TV series than movies. I normally don't watch any TV series with at least an 8.0 but I will watch movies from 6.5 if it's a genre I like.
