Did God send the gays?

Certain religious folk always yell "God sent this," and "God sent that," all the while telling gays that God hates them and they should repent and obey.
My question is, following their logic, didn't God send the gays and if that's true, God could have very well sent the gays just for them?

Did God make gay people gay? I think so. Did he do it to punish them? That makes absolutely no sense.

Well if God sent the shooter it only makes sense he sent the fornicator, the adulterer and the gay. Right?

That's the problem with classical monotheism (a sky buddy). There is so much complexity in the world and so many evil outcomes. Monotheists have to shrug their shoulders and call it a religious mystery. A polytheist has a few more options. He can say the gods are indifferent or that they are in contention with each other. A single all powerful, benevolent being doesn't have a way out of responsibility. It's just a "mystery".
